Football Player and the Millionaire: Deadly Love Triangle

A Calculating Plan

Prosecutor Matt Murphy is anxious to start trial for both defendants early next year. He's convicted several cases involving love triangles in which heartless couples turned into methodical killers.

He laid out his synopsis for a judge following the 2009 preliminary hearing.

"She had no degree from college that we're aware of. She had no skills. All she had was Bill McLaughlin. That's the only asset she had was that man. And she also took out — somehow managed to get a $1 million life insurance policy on a guy who is in his mid-50s, a former Marine in the absolute peak of health. There is no reason why Bill McLaughlin couldn't have lived another 50 years.

"With her boyfriend who has less than $1,000 in his bank account, they begin a search and meetings with a real estate agent shopping for what in 1994 was a $1 million house.

"Also with her meeting with the real estate agent she doesn't say 'We are ready to buy now.' She says, 'We will be ready to buy sometime after the spring.' So, sometime after the murder of Bill McLaughlin.

"So when the court examines the information in this case before the murder, the night of the murder, and after the murder, I submit to this court the evidence is overwhelming that these two people conspired and murdered Bill McLaughlin."
