She rarely talked about Jason or asked questions about his treatment. She spent little time at his bedside.
Most mothers in the ICU, the health care provider said, spend nearly all of their time at their children's side, touching them, holding their hands, rubbing their skin, and crying.
Molly did little of that, as far as the health care provider could see.

Alex, on the other hand, was more attentive to Jason. "He spent more time with the baby," the provider said. "He definitely had a more appropriate reaction."
A couple of days into Jason's stay at Children's Hospital, the relationship between Alex and Molly became even more strained.
After word reached the ICU that Molly had hired her own attorney—separate from the Midyette family attorney, who had been looking after the legal interests of both parents—the staff members saw no further contact between Alex and Molly.
