According to a Drug Enforcement Administration report, "Abuse is frequently associated with adolescents and young adults who take benzodiazepines to obtain a 'high.' This intoxicated state results in reduced inhibition and impaired judgment."

From the perspective of those who worked in the ICU while Jason was a patient there, the relationship between Alex and Molly seemed strained almost from the moment they arrived. They didn't hug, they didn't cry together, they didn't console each other.

"Within hours of arriving in our unit, Alex wanted nothing to do with Molly," the health care provider said. "He distanced himself from her in every way."

When Molly tried to talk to Alex, he walked away from her. "They were very distant," the provider said. "He was angry with her. It made me believe that he faulted her."

Molly's interaction with her son was as strained as with her husband. During the days the health care provider was on duty in the ICU, Molly remained distant from Jason.
