Alex and Molly arrived together the night Jason was transported from Boulder Community Hospital to Children's Hospital, but they interacted very little with each other.
Alex was visibly upset and appeared concerned about his son's condition. His behavior was similar to that of most other parents the health care provider has seen over the course of several years of work in pediatric intensive care.

Molly's behavior, however, was not consistent with most other parents in a similar situation.
"She wasn't normal," the provider said. "She wasn't normal at all."
Molly appeared drugged, according to the health care provider. "She was on something. She wasn't coherent. She didn't seem like she was even on this planet."

During the execution of a search warrant that same day at the Midyette's house in the Boulder suburb of Louisville, police found eight glass marijuana pipes and an unknown amount of marijuana.
A blood screening during Jason's autopsy found benzodiazepines present in his system. Benzodiazepines, also known as "benzos," are a class of psycho active drug commonly used as tranquilizers and are often prescribed to treat insomnia and anxiety. They can be addictive and are frequently abused.
