Martha Stewart has built an empire on good living, but on Oct. 8, 2004, she left all that behind when she reported to a federal prison in West Virginia to serve a five-month sentence. Though she could have remained free pending her appeal of the conviction stemming from a well-timed stock sale, Stewart had announced that she would voluntarily serve out her term to "put this nightmare behind" her.
