A Colombian lingerie model and beauty queen was convicted in Argentina on November 2nd, 2011, of drug smuggling. Angie Sanclemente, 31, and her boyfriend Nicolas Gualco have been sentenced to six years and eight months in prison. Sanclemente maintained her innocence throughout the trial, claiming that she came to Argentina in 2009 to marry Gualco, not to smuggle drugs. Prosecutors, however, argued that Sanclemente was the ringleader of a large international drug syndicate who gave orders to accomplices involved in packaging and smuggling cocaine. Sanclemente is reported to have begun her own cocaine operation, using other models as mules, after breaking off a relationship with a Mexican drug baron known as "The Monster." Sancelemente's business began to unravel after one of her smugglers, model Maria Noel Lopez Iglesias, was arrested at an Argentina airport trying to board a flight to Cancun with 55kg of cocaine. Sanclemente was arrested in May, 2010 after five months on the run. Several other people involved in the smuggling ring were also convicted and given milder sentences, including Lopez Iglesias, who was given a three-year suspended sentence.
