Michael Fletcher: A Simple Case of Murder

Back to the Crime Scene

Camelot...Jeez, Cleyman hated musicals, he had only seen Camelot once (a bunch of guys in tights and Vanessa Redgrave was all he remembered). As he drove to Hazel Park, Cleyman let his mind go blank and concentrated on the color blue. This was his way of distracting his mind when something was troubling him Often, he found that those unreachable thoughts in the back of his mind would leap forward into clarity.

Sure enough, before he reached the Fletcher house, he knew why he couldn't get the musical out of his head. In fact, it had nothing to do with Lerner and Loewe's musical. He had been watching the History Channel a couple of days ago and there had been this documentary on JFK's assassination. He remembered the Zapruder film and all of those photographs of Jackie Kennedy covered in blood. She had gotten those bloodstains trying to save JFK's life.

Mick Fletcher told him he had tried to find a pulse on Leann. He said he tried to help her. But Mick Fletcher had almost no blood on him. Certainly not as much as someone would get trying to treat a head wound.

Cleyman was met at the scene by Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Townsend, a skilled homicide investigator in his own right. Townsend had tried many homicide cases and knew the routine.

"Got a warrant?" Townsend asked.

"Yep. They're on the way," Cleyman replied. They walked up to the door, which opened before they could ring the bell.

"Can I help you?" asked the man who answered.

"Hey, Brian," Greg said, extending his hand. "Brian Legghio, this is Detective Cleyman. Brian used to be with the U.S. Attorney's Office. Are you a friend of Mick Fletcher?"

"Actually, I am advising Mick. I am his attorney," Brian said. "What can I do for you?"

"Well, Brian. We've got some questions for your client and other officers are on their way with a couple of search warrants."

"My client will be happy to cooperate, but you must understand he's in shock and grieving."

"Uh-huh," Greg said. "Can we come in?"

"Sure," Brian said, displaying a pained grin. "As soon as they get here with the warrants."
