Boulder, Colo. (Crime Library) — Infant Jason Jay Midyette was the victim of a homicide. At least, that was the ruling issued by the Boulder County Coroner's Office on Monday. An autopsy found that the baby had a fractured skull and more than 20 other broken bones when he died last winter. Boulder Coroner Thomas Faure reported that Jason died from "blunt force craniocerebral injuries."

The public pronouncements made on Monday were comprehensive. The Rocky Mountain News listed some of the experts consulted in determining the child's cause of death:

  • Dr. Ross Reichard, a medical investigator from New Mexico, reported finding "traumatic injuries of varying ages."
  • Dr. Robert Keyser from the University of Colorado found evidence of hemorrhaging in the baby's eyes.
  • Dr. Peter Bullough, with the Hospital for Special Surgery, connected to Cornell University, discovered evidence of healing fractures that were first made 2 to 3 weeks before Jason Midyette died.

Dr. Bullough and a special diagnostic lab associated with the University of Washington found no evidence whatsoever of brittle bone disease.

Jason Jay Midyette was not yet 11 weeks old when his parents rushed him to the Boulder Community Hospital on February 24, 2006. Jason, born on December 17th of the previous year, would never make it to 11 weeks. Jason Midyette was removed from life-support on March 3rd. The coroner would say that Midyette had "closed-head injuries."

The infant was the grandson of well-known Boulder architect J. Nold Midyette.
