Dec. 7, 2005: Quebec's justice minister says he won't ask the Supreme Court of Canada for leave to appeal a Quebec judge's ruling to lift restrictions imposed on Karla Homolka's freedom.

Dec. 6, 2005: A Quebec Court of Appeal turns down a request by the province's justice minister to appeal a lower court order lifting court-imposed restrictions on Karla Homolka's freedom. The three judges unanimously agreed there were no legal errors when the lower court judge struck down the restrictions a week earlier. Ontario's attorney general and the lawyer for the families of Homolka's victims say they will ask Quebec to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Dec. 2, 2005: Quebec Justice Minister Yvon Marcoux says the province will appeal Justice James Brunton's decision to lift the restrictions that had been placed on Karla Homolka's freedom.

Nov. 30, 2005: A Montreal judge overturns the 14 conditions imposed on Karla Homolka when she was released from prison on July 4, 2005. The restrictions were ordered under provisions of the Criminal Code after a judge ruled she still posed a risk to the community.

Among the conditions that were lifted are that she must not communicate with ex-husband Paul Bernardo or his family or any violent offenders, that she not use drugs or narcotics except with a medical prescription, and that she not take paid or volunteer work that involves anyone under the age of 16.

Tim Danson, the lawyer for the families of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, urges Quebec's attorney general to appeal the decision.

Nov. 3, 2005: The Quebec Justice Department releases a statement saying Homolka did not breach the conditions of her release and she will not face any additional charges.

Oct. 24, 2005: Lawyers for Homolka argue that release conditions on their client should be loosened because there is no evidence she poses a danger to society. Homolka's lawyers call the conditions excessively punitive and a violation of her constitutional rights.

Government lawyers argue that there is evidence to support the restrictions placed on Homolka.

Sept. 15, 2005: Quebec Justice James Brunton allows the parents of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French to have standing at Homolka's appeal, which is delayed until late October 2005.

August 2005: Homolka finds work in a hardware store in Longueuil, a suburb of Montreal. Her boss, Richer Lapointe, later reveals Homolka's location to the media and releases audio tapes he made of their conversations. Homolka quits her job and goes back into hiding.

July 5, 2005: Paul Bernardo, speaking through his lawyer, says Homolka attempted to murder Leslie Mahaffy on her own to prevent Mahaffy from identifying them after they raped her. Bernardo says it was his intention to release Mahaffy.

July 4, 2005: Karla Homolka is released from prison after serving her 12-year sentence. Amidst a media circus, she is whisked out of the St. Anne des Plaines prison, north of Montreal, where she had been transferred about a month before her release.

Homolka's lawyers continue fighting in court to prevent the media from reporting on her life outside prison, including her whereabouts.
