A Grand Jury Investigation
Wednesday Lacy announced that a grand jury has been hearing evidence related to the death of Jason Midyette since late October. The panel, whose proceedings are kept secret by state law, has reportedly been meeting one night per week to listen to testimony and review evidence.
Grand juries, which are typically empanelled for a year, are rare in Colorado criminal cases.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera, only three Boulder County grand juries have been empanelled to investigate homicide cases in the last 20 years. None have returned indictments.

Mary Lacy |
Nearly three years ago, Lacy called a grand jury together to reinvigorate the stalled nearly year-long investigation into the shooting death of an 86-year-old gas station attendant. After spending an additional year listening to the DA's evidence, the grand jury chose not return any indictments.
Another grand jury spent 13 months probing the 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey without success.

Sid Wells |
In the early 1980s, according to the Camera, a grand jury spent 15 months investigating the shotgun slaying of 22-year-old Sid Wells, a University of Colorado journalism student who had recently dated the daughter of actor Robert Redford. No indictments were returned in that case either.
