Investigators received their first solid lead in the case yesterday, when they were tipped off to 24-year-old Christopher R. Jones, by two female acquaintances that were being questioned about Jones in regard to an unrelated incident. The women allegedly told police that Jones showed up at their Boynton Beach apartment Monday and asked them to help him with an "emergency situation." It remains unclear what information Jones gave the two women regarding the circumstances of that situation. However, when police searched the apartment, they found several items purportedly belonging to Jones, including a gun and blood-soaked clothing.

When police took Jones into custody, he surprised investigators by readily admitting to killing Chad and provided them with specific details on the murder and the motive behind it.

According to Jones, someone had told him that Chad had $25,000 to $30,000, along with a large quantity of marijuana, in his safe—information that may have been plausible, as court records show Chad had a previous criminal record, with arrests for possession and cultivation of marijuana. So, with robbery on his mind, Jones allegedly went to Chad's house in suburban Boca Raton Monday morning and entered the home by setting fire to a plastic covered window.

Once inside, Jones searched the house and found Chad asleep in his bedroom. Unable to open the safe without a combination, Jones roused Chad from his sleep and demanded the combination to the safe. Chad, however, was unwilling to cooperate and jumped out of bed ready for a fight. Intimidated by Chad's 6' 3" frame and muscular build, Jones had no intention of going hands-on with Chad and instead pulled out a gun and unloaded it on him. As Chad slumped to the ground, Jones made a break for it, but not before allegedly trying to put out the growing fire with a plant watering can. When that failed to work, Jones ran outside and sped off in his van.
