PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Crime Library) — The search for Lisa Stebic is now in its fifth month, and police are still no closer to discovering what happened to the missing mother of two. The lack of progress in the case has forced Lisa Stebic's family members to face the grim reality that their loved one has probably met with foul play.

Lisa Stebic, 37, was last seen at about 6 p.m. on April 30 at her home, 13244 Red Star Drive. The following day, one of Lisa's neighbors reported her missing. When investigators went to her home, they discovered that her car was in the garage, but her cell phone and purse were missing.

Lisa and her husband, Craig, 41, have been married for 14 years and have a 12-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son together. Prior to Lisa's disappearance, the couple was in the middle of divorce proceedings. The police had recently been called to the residence to settle a heated argument, the details of which are not yet known. According to The Tribune, Craig Stebic has a criminal record that includes two felony counts from 1995 for unlawful use of a weapon.

In July, Police Chief Donald Bennett held a press conference naming Craig Stebic a "person of interest" in his wife's disappearance. Bennett said Stebic has offered investigators only minimal assistance and will not allow them to question the couple's children. Stebic also allegedly refused to submit to a polygraph test.

"Mr. Stebic's refusal to allow access to his children has clearly hampered our investigation," Chief Bennett told reporters at the press conference. "It is also the belief of this agency that the children, if allowed, would welcome the opportunity to locate their mother."

Stebic's attorney, Dion Davi, has advised his client not to discuss the case or to allow his children to talk with police. In an interview with The Herald News, Davi said detectives are wasting their time focusing on his client, "Especially given the fact that there isn't, to my knowledge, anything that points to him other than the fact that he is the last person to have come forward and say that he saw her."
