During this time, the girls' friends had already begun focusing on McFarland. On September 7, a user with the screen name "whoknowswhat" posted the following message to an Internet message board maintained by the Palladium-Item:
"I talked with the family last week...Kelly was sure the boyfriend had harmed her sister and she was going to do everything in her power to raise her sister's child."
In response to growing media pressure, Shipman finally relented, and in mid-September, he announced that a tape of the 911 emergency call from September 1 would be available to the public.
When the tape was released, it revealed that McFarland was the one who found Erin unresponsive in her bed at approximately 5:15 a.m.

Lonny Stanley told the 911 operator her daughter was "unresponsive, her eyes are halfway open and she's blue."
"Is she breathing?" the operator asked.
"I don't know. Is she breathing, Dad? She's trying," Mrs. Stanley said.
When police and emergency personnel arrived on the scene, they performed CPR on Erin, but they were unable to revive her, and she was later pronounced dead at Reid Hospital.
Six days later, on September 7, police were again called to the Stanley home, at which time they found Erin's sister, 18-year-old Kelly Stanley, unresponsive. Paramedics were unable to revive her, and she died at the scene.
