"The thing I was going to write to you about was that all my statements I gave the investigators are not the truth," Dassey wrote.
Dassey claimed he was not involved in Teresa's death. He said he had helped his uncle gather material for the fire, but that he had no knowledge that it was being used to burn Teresa's body. In closing his letter, Dassey wrote:
"Me and my mom think you are a good judge. Thank you for your time."

Unfortunately for Dassey, nothing he could say could make people forget about the key details he gave to investigators — details they claim only someone involved in the rape and murder would have been privy to.
Prior to the start of Avery's trial, prosecutors offered Dassey a deal. In return for testifying against his uncle, he would be sentenced to no more than 15 years in prison. Dassey, perhaps convinced a jury would find him innocent, turned down the deal.
