Shortly thereafter Avery took a knife from the kitchen and waved it in front of Teresa's face, telling her he was going to kill her. He then stabbed her in the stomach and handed the knife to Dassey and told him to cut her throat. Dassey obeyed. He took the knife in his hand, pushed it tightly against her throat and in a quick motion slid it across her jugular vein, causing her lifeblood to rapidly spill from her body.
Afterward, Avery strangled her to ensure she was dead. Despite this, he was obviously not satisfied, as he put her body in the trunk of her car, drove to a garage on the property and shot her approximately 10 times with a .22-caliber rifle. The two men then put Teresa's body on a nearby fire pit. To accelerate the fire, they threw tires and brush on top of her body. The two men then set about cleaning up the blood evidence inside the garage.

The following day, Avery pulled Teresa's bones from the fire pit and broke them up with a shovel before burying them on the property.
Following his confession, police arrested Dassey and charged him with being party to first-degree intentional homicide, mutilation of a corpse and second-degree sexual assault.
In the weeks following his confession, Dassey apparently realized he had sealed his own fate by voluntarily speaking to police about Teresa's murder. On June 30, 2006, he mailed a letter to Judge Fox in which he recanted his confession.
