Tanya detailed her ordeal for prosecutors
According to authorities, Tanya had told police that at first, her sojourn with Hose was a kind of romantic adventure. Hose allegedly arranged with a local hairdresser named Judith Sokol — who has been charged as an accomplice in the crime — to dye and cut Tanya's tresses, and authorities have also alleged that the woman facilitated Hose's first sexual encounter with Tanya.

Tanya reportedly told investigators that on several occasions after she left home, she and Hose would sneak over to Sokol's house and spend the night there. "In fact, this was the location that (they) first...engaged in vaginal intercourse." Authorities note that Sokol ended her affiliation with Hose and Kach a short time later, after investigators from the state Division of Children and Youth Services approached her to ask a few questions about the missing child. There is no indication, authorities have suggested, that Sokol cooperated with the investigators at the time.

Although authorities say there is evidence to suggest that she was physically restrained, no shackles or ropes, or handcuffs, authorities now believe Hose used a far more effective means to bind the girl to him. He used fear, they allege, and he used her own insecurity and psychological vulnerabilities against her. Often, according to published reports, he would tell her that he was the only person in the world who cared for her, that no one, not her father, not the authorities, no one missed her and no one was looking for her.
