Friends and family were very concerned for her and Jonathan's welfare and were relieved when the couple broke up in April 2007. Unfortunately, even though the relationship ended, the violence didn't. On May 27, 2007, Jaclyn sustained a broken jaw after Salvator allegedly hit her during one of their many arguments
On Wednesday, July 11, 2007 Jaclyn left her apartment to run some errands, temporarily leaving behind Jonathan in his crib, Martin McKenzie reported for KKTV 11 News. Strangely, she never returned. According to the report, Heather Townsend, a good friend and roommate of Jaclyn and Jonathan, said that she believed Jaclyn "knew she was coming back," which is why she left Jonathan in the crib. She said that "She (Jaclyn) always had Jonathan with her everywhere she went," McKenzie quoted Townsend as saying.

Police, who were contacted the next day, believe a vital clue to Jaclyn's disappearance centered on an incident witnessed by a friend of hers. Jaclyn's friend, who remains unidentified, claimed to have seen her arguing with Salvator outside a drugstore on July 11th, while Jaclyn was running errands on her day off, Correll reported. According to her friend, Salvator became angry and threw a cell phone that belonged to Lopez on the floor, one which Jaclyn borrowed and planned to return to her that day, Correll said. Not long afterwards, both Jaclyn and Salvator showed up later at Wendy's to drop off the phone.
