When Gordon did not get a response to repeated knocks on the door at his daughter's 4th St. apartment, he asked the building manager to let him in so he could check on her. When Gordon stepped inside, his worst fears became a reality, when he discovered his daughter's body sprawled out on the floor of her bedroom. The Minot Police Department was summoned to the scene at about 5:12 p.m. Investigators on the scene refused to comment on the investigation, however a neighbor of Anita's told KXMB CBS12 that he observed that her bedroom window was broken when he parked his bike in a rack next to her apartment.

The day after the discovery of Anita's body, Lt. Dan Strandberg of the Minot Police Department held a press conference at Minot City Hall. Strandberg said preliminary reports suggest Anita was murdered the day before she was discovered. He refused to comment on how she was murdered, pending the release of her autopsy and lab tests on evidence recovered from the scene; however, he did make some observations about Anita's murder.
