MINOT, N.D. (Crime Library) — Last week a Minot State University student was found dead in her off-campus apartment. Despite an intensive investigation police still have no suspects in her murder. Investigators say evidence suggests the killer was unknown to the victim — a revelation that has left many people in the community wondering if the killer will strike again.

Friends and family have described 18-year-old Anita Knutson as a petite, bright and attractive young woman who held the future in the palm of her hand. Anita's father, Gordon, is the mayor of Butte, and her mother, Sharon, owns and operates the Country Foods grocery store and restaurant. According to friends of the family the Knutsons are pillars of the community. Anita was one of three children adopted by her parents. The fact that the children were adopted took nothing away from the relationship, and all of the children were raised in a caring and loving environment.

Anita was exceptionally responsible for her age, and she somehow managed to juggle three part-time jobs while at the same time attending college at Minot State University, where she majored in elementary education. Even though most of her free time was spoken for, Anita always managed to make time for friends and family. So, on June 4, Gordon became worried when his daughter failed to return telephone calls from friends and family over the course of the previous two days. Concerned for her well-being, Gordon decided to check on her.
