Purcell, OK (Crime Library) — I have written extensively about Kevin Underwood's posts in blogs and on message boards in earlier articles. One of the most disturbing things about them was how normal he seemed, much of the time. Only hints of Underwood's secret self could be found in his online communications, and seeing these 'hints' after Underwood's arrest on the 14th could be written off as hindsight.
Alicia was a friend Underwood mentioned quite a bit in his "futureworldruler" weblog. It seemed apparent that he wished for more than a friendship with her, but the feeling was never reciprocated. Alicia is being referred to by her first name only in this article to preserve a modicum of privacy.
On April 27, 2006, I interviewed Alicia about her friendship with Kevin Underwood and her reaction to Underwood's arrest earlier in the month and crime for which he stands accused.
Alicia has a background in journalism, and her inquisitive nature and desire to both understand and clarify what really happened was apparent in her thoughtful answers to the following questions:
How did you get to know Kevin Underwood?
I met Kevin through work, at Carl's Jr. in 1999. Over the years, we became friends.
He seemed to "love from afar" a lot. Did you ever get the feeling he had a thing for you?
I did get that feeling. And he wrote about it on a blog. No matter what I said to him, "I'm not interested, you're just my friend," it seems like he suppressed those feelings. I don't know how long he kept on with those thoughts.
What was Kevin like at work, in casual social situations? He described in a blog entry "punching brick walls" at parties that got too crowded. Did you see him do anything like that?
It really depended on what kind of social situations he was in. The blog entry in which he said he punched brick walls, I was at that party, but I didn't see him do it. When we just went to hang out, or go to the movies, he seemed like any of my other friends. There wasn't anything that really seemed different to me. And he was the same at work. People annoyed him, and he complained.
