"That's what I would think when I watched cases like this," he said. "When Laci Peterson came up missing (in 2002), I was sure her husband (Scott) did it. But now I'm on the other side of it. I know people think I had something to do with why Tara is missing, but I didn't do it."
On Saturday morning, Grant made a series of telephone calls. The first known calls were made to his attorney, David Griem. At some point, Griem notified the authorities that his client had contacted him. According to statements by Griem, Grant sounded desperate, and left him with the impression that he was planning to commit suicide. Later in the afternoon, Grant placed a call to his sister to check on his children.

Investigators were able to trace the calls that Grant made to Wilderness State Park in Emmet County, some 225 miles from Washington Township. They immediately contacted the Emmet County Sheriff's Department, and, within the hour, the vehicle Grant was driving was found abondened near Carp Lake, just west of the state park.
Throughout Saturday night and into Sunday morning, the Emmet County Sheriff's Department, with assistance from the FBI, the Michigan State Police, the Mackinaw County Police, and the United States Coast Guard conducted an intense air and ground search. At daybreak on Sunday, searchers spotted footprints in a wooded area. Not far from those tracks, Grant was spotted walking in the snow. He attempted to flee the area on foot, but authorities quickly apprehended him before aerial units lost sight of his position.
