As part of their investigation, sheriff's detectives questioned Lewis. They asked if he had seen Kaitlin that afternoon. They also asked about what appeared to be fresh marks on his face.
"He gave conflicting statements and outright lies about his whereabouts, as to his going to work, as to scratch marks he had on his face," said Livingston Parish Sheriff Willie Graves.
At three o'clock Friday morning, detectives arrested Lewis for obstruction of justice.

During a search of the Lewises' trailer, sheriff's deputies removed a number of bagged items of evidence, including a camera and a computer. They also sent his 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for examination.
All day Friday and into Saturday, deputies and volunteers continued to expand their search radius while Kaitlin's mom huddled with family and friends at home, waiting and hoping for good news.
Kaitlin and her mother had an especially close relationship. "She doesn't go anywhere without calling me, and I don't go anywhere without calling her," Danette Aydell told The Advocate newspaper.
On Kaitlin's MySpace.com Web site, she lists her mom as her only hero.
The news Danette Aydell and her family were waiting for came early Saturday night, but it wasn't good. Two volunteer searchers had found the body of a young girl in neighboring Ascension Parish.
