Two weeks before Maureen disappeared, Fields says, he found out she'd been draining thousands of dollars from one of their bank accounts.
"I think she got involved in gambling," he says.
Fields says he told Maureen—who usually handled the couple's finances—that he was going to start opening all of their bank and credit card statements when they arrived in the mail.

Later, after his wife disappeared, Fields says, he found out she'd taken thousands of dollars more in cash advances using their credit cards.
He says she may have run away rather than face up to squandering their money.
Fields says he was shocked to find out through bank and credit card statements that Maureen took approximately $30,000 in cash advances during the four or five months before she disappeared.
"I think that had some bearing on her going, because how was she going to explain all the money missing," Fields says.
Paul Fields also speculates that Maureen may have committed suicide, but he cannot explain why, if she killed herself, her body has not been found.
"She either ran off or did something to harm herself," Fields says. "I don't know which she did. If I had to guess, I'd say ran off."
