Psychics Arrested
Sophie Evon
Sophie Evon
After fleeing the law for nearly nine years, 79-year-old Sophie Evon was caught in Calgary in late 2007, extradited to the U.S. and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of first-degree theft. In 1999, Evon and her daughter-in-law Sylvia Lee persuaded a recent Chinese immigrant desperate to win back her boyfriend to hand over nearly $200,000 so that Evon and Lee could pray over the money. When the victim returned for the cash two days later, the two women were gone. The two were later arrested in Toronto, and Lee was convicted of three counts of first-degree theft and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Evon, however, fled house arrest and was not recaptured until her 2007 arrest.
