Arrested on March 16, 2011, for a four-year stint in California's prison system on a narcotics conviction, Earl Lee Vogt, 29, had already prepared for the stay, unbeknownst to prison personnel. That evening a guard who smelled marijuana smoke coming from Vogt's cell decided to perform a strip search and toss the cell. Guards found a Kyocera cell phone, an MP3 player, ear bud headphones, marijuana, tobacco, and $140 in cash, probably all smuggled in via his rectum. When asked about the pot, Vogt said he bought it from another inmate with a second mp3 player he had smuggled into the lockup. According to the Smoking Gun, "When questioned by a sheriff's deputy who thought he was feeling discomfort, Vogt denied being in pain, though he noted, 'My ass is bleeding.'"
