While most reports indicate that Kara and Ludwig had tried to keep their relationship secret, there is little to suggest that they had much success. On the video, for example, Ludwig and his friend are heard discussing having sex with both Kara Borden and her sister, though there is nothing in the record to suggest that the Kara's sister was involved in any relationship with either of the young men.

The young men also apparently recognized that any sexual relationship with the underage girls would constitute statutory rape under Pennsylvania law, the newspaper reported, and the pair even suggested that they might have to shoot a person identified only as "Jonathan" if he discovered their trysts.

Nor was news of Ludwig's sexual activity with the 14-year-old girl limited to Ludwig and his one dark-clad friend. According to published reports, several of Ludwig's close friends knew about the relationship, and like Kara's confidants, they fretted over the changes they were seeing in the young man.

As one friend, 16-year-old Zach Horvath, told the Lancaster paper, "I knew he was sneaking into her house in the middle of the night...People were getting pretty upset about it."

But, in hindsight, Ludwig's friends now say, it appears there were even more chilling hints about what was to come. Just two days before the slaying, it has been reported, Ludwig and some friends gathered at a local school for a play. Perhaps it was just idle chat. Maybe it was a glimpse of something more ominous, but as they chatted Ludwig made a comment that now looms large in his friend's memory. In a statement reminiscent of the boasts made by Wisconsin honor student and Eagle Scout Gary Hirte, who was convicted last year of murdering an emotionally disturbed stranger just to see if he could do it, Ludwig allegedly told his friends that he believed he ""could kill someone and get away with it, disappear and nobody would find me."
