Crime Library: Criminal Minds and Methods

Investigation into the Murder of Dr. David Cornbleet

Heartache

Comparing David's index cards to his medical records, authorities were able to account for all medical records. According to Jonathan, none of his father's possessions were missing from the office, and all of the drugs were accounted for.

From the beginning, investigators suspected David had known his killer. They declared they were looking into "several persons of interest" and were convinced that, when they found the killer, they would have no trouble identifying him, because he had left "substantial" forensic evidence behind.

According to Jonathan, there were no pending lawsuits; however, he did acknowledge there were occasional problems. "You always get people here or there who are not entirely satisfied. Those who wanted more than what you were capable of giving them."

Jonathan also had his own theories about the killer:

"He was sophisticated enough to know what he was doing. I have been in that building over a thousand times, and I didn't even know where the cameras were. He did his homework. He knew when the other offices would be empty. He went there with the intention of killing my father.

"There is no such thing as perfect crime. I am very confident this person will be caught."

Whenever Jonathan spoke to the media the heartache in his voice was apparent. The emotional strain had obviously been difficult for him. During his interview with Crime Library he often referred to his dad as his "best friend."

"I liked being around him. I helped out at his office because it was a good way for us to spend time together. I loved him more than words can express."

Jonathan and his family offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for David's murder. They also created a profile on the popular social networking Web site MySpace.com, in the hope that someone might recognize something about the figure in the grainy surveillance footage. Also on the Web site was the heartfelt message Jonathan wrote about his dad:

"In the bible David and Jonathan were the best of friends. I was named Jonathan because of this. My father was my absolute best friend. I love him more than words can ever express, the word love does not even begin to tell the tale of our relationship. We have chemistry and a bond that was very unique. He understood me far greater than anybody else ever has or will be able to...

"This whole tragedy has left a tremendous emptiness inside of me. It makes me very sad to think that I will never get to grab another sandwich together after a Saturday at the office, that he will never get to meet the children we have that he was so looking forward to meeting, that he will never see my sister get married, that the next political election I will not have my friend to share my thoughts with and that I will never get to see him treat another one of his of patients. He is and always will be my best friend. He is who I have always looked up to in life. All of my best qualities were instilled on me by him. I am and always will be proud to be his son. I take great pride in knowing what a wonderful influence he was and always will be to me."
