BLACKSBURG, Va.  (Crime Library) —  Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year-old Virginia Tech senior believed to have committed the bloodiest single-handed mass killing in U.S. history, was committed to a mental facility in December, police said Wednesday.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said a search of his department's records in the wake of Monday's murderous shooting spree revealed that VT officers had at least two contacts with Cho in late 2005.

On November 27, 2005, campus police received a complaint from a female student about Cho. The student, whom police did not identify, said that Cho had made what she considered inappropriate or unwanted contact with her in person and by telephone.

The student did not want to press charges against Cho, but a police officer did interview him. The matter was then referred to the university's Office of Judicial Affairs, which handles student discipline.

On December 12, 2005, another female student complained to campus police about instant messages Cho sent her.

As with the first complainant, the second student did not want to press charges.

Police said that in neither case did Cho make any direct threats.

Later that same day, campus police got yet a third call about Cho. The new call came from an acquaintance who warned that Cho may be suicidal.

For the second time in a little more than two weeks, police again interviewed Cho. This time the interview lasted much longer.

During their conversation with Cho, the police officers became concerned enough about his mental state that they asked him to accompany them to the campus police station.
