'I WAS PURE EVIL'
In October 2003, Gillis picked up 45-year-old Johnnie Mae Williams near North Street in Baton Rouge. Johnnie was a drug addict with a long string of arrests, including prostitution, forgery, battery, and theft. She was also the divorced mother of three children. Gillis had known her for 10 years. They were friends.
Gillis drove Johnnie up to the northern end of the parish where he beat her, strangled her, and raped her. Then he slashed her body with a knife. When he was finished, Gillis posed Johnnie in different positions and snapped pictures of her.

According to published press reports, DNA evidence linked Derrick Todd Lee to the deaths of seven women. Now, with Gillis's slaying of Johnnie Mae Williams, they were tied.
In February 2004, Gillis picked up 43-year-old Donna Bennett Johnston about three miles from North Street Park. Donna was a prostitute. She was drunk. They talked about price, what she would do and for how much. Gillis agreed. He drove her somewhere quiet, probably to a park near his Burgin Street home.

Donna stood 5 feet tall and weighed barely 100 pounds. Gillis wound a cable tie around her neck and strangled her. It took about a minute and a half for Donna to die. Just before she slipped into unconsciousness, she looked at Gillis and gasped, "I can't breathe."
Gillis undressed her and laid her out on the ground. He pulled out a knife. He slashed her breasts and cut off her left nipple. He carved a chunk of flesh from her right thigh. Then he hacked off her left arm at the elbow.

Street Donna's body found |
The next day, people out looking for a lost dog found Donna's body lying in a trash-strewn ditch that cut across Ben Hur Road. Gillis had dumped her less than two miles from the house he shared with his girlfriend.
Instead of taking pictures as mementos, as he had done after killing Johnnie Mae Williams, police sources tell Crime Library that Gillis took Donna's arm and later used her hand to masturbate.
Donna Johnston was Gillis's eighth victim in 10 years. He had beaten Derrick Todd Lee in the serial killer decathlon.
