Molly Midyette Found Guilty

BOULDER, Colo. (AP)  -- A mother whose 10-week-old son died after being taken to a hospital with 30 broken bones was found guilty Friday of child abuse resulting in death.

Prosecutors said Molly Midyette waited too long to get medical care for her son Jason.

Jurors deliberated just 61/2 hours following a two-week trial. She mouthed "my life is over," then took off a necklace and handed it to a family member before being led away in handcuffs to the Boulder County Justice Center.

During testimony earlier this week, Midyette said she opted to take her son to her family doctor instead of the emergency room because she thought he would get better attention.

Jurors had the option of convicting Midyette on a lesser charge of criminally negligent child abuse.

She faces a mandatory prison sentence of between 16 to 48 years, followed by five years of parole for the felony conviction.

Her attorney told jurors he believes the baby's father, Alex Midyette, abused the infant.

Alex Midyette, who was in the courtroom, started sobbing after the verdict was read.

Alex Midyette also faces charges of fatal child abuse and is scheduled be tried later. Prosecutors allege he injured the baby.

He pleaded not guilty. Molly Midyette has said she doesn't believe he hurt the baby.

Jason had a head injury and more than 30 broken bones when he died in 2006.
