BTK killer files appeal in Kansas murders

Admitted BTK killer Dennis Rader has filed a notice of appeal in his string of 10 murders.

The standard one-page notice, which was filed Oct. 20 by Rader's public defenders, says Rader is appealing the life sentence "and all adverse rulings of the district court."

One possible target of Rader may be restrictions sought by prosecutors on his freedoms in prison.

Those rules aim to keep the killer from reliving his fantasies by barring him from seeing, listening or reading news reports about his murders; prohibiting him from recordings other than for law enforcement purposes; and restricting him from receiving any writing or other instruments that he could use to make anything pornographic to satisfy his sexual fantasies.

The appeal will be handled by the state appellate defender's office in Topeka.

Rader gave himself the name BTK - for his preferred method to "bind, torture and kill" - and haunted Wichita for decades. He was arrested in February, pleaded guilty in June and sentenced two months later.
