Homolka cleared of allegations

MONTREAL (AP) — Karla Homolka did not violate her release conditions this summer and will not face any additional criminal charges, Quebec justice officials said last week.

In 1993, Homolka became the symbol of evil in Canada when she was convicted of manslaughter for her role in the kidnappings, rapes, sexual torture and murders of Ontario teenagers Kristen French of St. Catharines and Leslie Mahaffy of Burlington.

She also was convicted in the 1990 death of her 15-year-old sister, Tammy, who choked to death on Christmas Eve after Homolka held a drug-soaked cloth over her mouth while both she and her husband, Paul Bernardo, raped her.

Homolka was released from prison in July after serving her entire 12-year manslaughter sentence.

Richer Lapointe, Homolka's former employer, had alleged she violated conditions of her release by contacting someone with a criminal record and by coming into contact with children.

Police in nearby Longueuil, where Lapointe ran a hardware store, investigated the allegations and gave their evidence to prosecutors Oct. 18.

"The [prosecutors'] study of the file did not reveal that any criminal act was committed," the Quebec Justice Department said in a statement last week.

"As a result, no charge will be laid against Madame Karla Leanne Teale Homolka."

Breaching those conditions could have put Homolka back behind bars for up to two years.

Sylvie Bordelais, one of Homolka's lawyers, had no immediate comment.
