Confession Released in Case of Jake Evans, Teen Charged With Killing Mom, Sister

Jake Evans

Jake Evans

It seems that 17-year-old Jake Evans never intended to hide the October murders of his mother Jami, 47, and sister Mallory, 15. Immediately after the killings, Jake called 911 (heard below) and told the operator, “I just killed my mother and sister” and “I shot them with a .22 revolver.” A confession Jake wrote following his arrest offers insight into the young man’s thought process before and after the slayings.

According to the confession (available in full below,) which was presented in court Wednesday and made public Thursday despite the defense’s objections,  Jake was inspired by Rob Zombie’s film Halloween. “While watching it, I was amazed at how at ease the boy was during the murders and how little remorse he had afterward,” wrote Jake, “Afterward, I was thinking to myself it would be the same for me when I kill someone.” After watching, Jake wrote that he threw the movie away so that no one would think it influenced him. After killing his mother and sister, Jake wrote that he planned to go to his grandparents’ house and kill them and his older sister.

Jake wrote about how he imagined killing Mallory. The thought of causing her pain bothered him, he wrote, so he would think about the times she’d hurt his feelings. According to the confession, he invited his sister to watch the movie Waterboy, and while they were watching, retrieved a knife. He sat next to her with the knife in his pocket and thought about how he didn’t want to cause her pain. So he engaged her in a playful pillow fight and then went and got the revolver he’d stolen from his grandfather. He paced around for a while gathering himself and then knocked on Mallory’s door. “She came out and out of the corner of her eye saw me pointing the gun at her,” Jake wrote. “She thought I was joking and told me that I was freaking her out. I shot her in the back and then the head. I ran down to the study and shot my mom three times. In shock, I ran to my room and was screaming at the top of my lungs that I am really messed up and that I killed my mom and sister.”

On the fourth and final page of the confession, Jake wrote that he saw a lot of racism, cruelty and bullying around him, and was afraid that his family were turning into the people he hated. Jake concluded his confession by saying that the killings were “the most dreadful and terrifying thing [he] will ever experience.”

Jake is charged with capital murder.
