SAN JUAN DEL SUR, Nicaragua (Crime Library) — Last week a Nicaraguan appeals court overturned the conviction of 28-year-old Eric Volz, an American real estate broker and magazine publisher, who was wrongfully convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, Doris Ivania Jimenez. Despite the ruling, Eric remained in police custody until Friday, when he was finally released.

"He's out of Nicaragua and he's been freed of all charges and it's just incredible what happened," Eric's mother, Maggie Anthony, said at a press conference Friday evening. "I don't know what happened, but it's amazing... This past 48 hours has been insane. It was really touch and go for a long time. We really didn't know if Eric was going to make it home and things changed so quickly. I will worry about him until he is on U.S. soil."

According to Maggie, Eric was flown out of Nicaragua on a private plan and is staying at an undisclosed location while he recovers from health problems he developed in prison.

The website maintained by Eric's supporters, www.friendsofericvolz.com, was also updated Friday and the following statement was posted on the home page:

"Eric Volz was released from a Nicaraguan prison hospital earlier today and will be in hiding, due to reports of threats against him. We have reason to believe he is being followed and are taking every precaution to assure his safety.

"Our family is overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of support of Eric's innocence over the past year. In the center of an impossible situation, we have experienced the most abundant love from friends and total strangers, and we thank you.

"We are grateful to the courageous individuals in the Nicaraguan government who fought for truth and justice to prevail in this case as well to those in the US government who provided assistance in securing Eric's release.

"This ordeal has taken an incredible physical and emotional toll on all of us, especially Eric. We thank you in advance for respecting our privacy and allowing our family to recover."
