Essex Police have yet to reveal what prompted the search of the property, other than to say it came about as the result of a "cold case review."
The current occupants of the property, Nicola Dowling and her boyfriend, Mark Drage, were moved to a hotel last week. Police say they are not linked to the investigation. On Saturday, Tabitha Wilson, an Essex Police press officer, read a brief statement to the media on behalf of Nicola. It read in part:
"On Friday, November 9, Essex Police visited our house and explained everything to us. We had never heard of Peter Tobin and found the news devastating and unreal. I can only describe it as a nightmare that gets worse every day. We lived in the house for 12 years and had a happy family home. What they have found is awful; it has turned our family upside down. Moving out of our home has been traumatic. We feel enormous sympathy for Dinah's father and what he is going through, and we want to get the answers he needs. Since we moved out, the developments have been shocking for all of us."
Nicola said she could never live in the house again with the knowledge of the victims who have been found on the property.
According to a spokesperson for the Essex police, the search will now focus on the interior of the property. The floors will be pulled up, and the foundation will be examined with special radar systems that are designed to detect irregularities in the ground to determine whether more bodies are concealed on the property.
