News of the incident quickly spread, and, on Halloween, the Archdiocese of Louisville issued the following statement:
"The Archdiocese learned today about the allegation against Dr. Paul Schum, principal of Bethlehem High School. Per our policy, Dr. Schum has requested and is taking (paid) personal leave from his position as principal of Bethlehem High School pending the outcome of the investigation. Dr. Schum denies the allegation."

Despite the allegations against him, Schum's friends, neighbors, and even classmates say they will stand by him.
"Paul Schum is a wonderful administrator," an unidentified parent told Whas11.com. "He's been good to Bethlehem. Charismatic, energetic."
Schum's neighbor, Kyle Wooten, shared similar sentiments with Fox11az.com.
"He's got a beautiful wife and daughter; he's a great father," Wooten said, adding, "It still seems to me that it's like a trick, that it's not real."
