SANTA ANA, Calif. (Crime Library) —  Phone calls between Jennifer Deleon and husband Skylar while a plot unfolded to murder a retired couple and steal their yacht help prove her complicity in the case, the prosecution is claiming to a jury.

Last week Newport Beach police Detective Dave White testified regarding the timing dozens of cell phone calls between the Deleons during critical times involving the planning and execution of the deaths of Thomas and Jackie Hawks off the coast of Southern California. Jennifer Deleon is on trial for two counts of murder and Skylar will have his own trial next year.

Orange County Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy showed the jury several large exhibits chronicling dozens of phone calls between the Deleons and other accused participants in the killings. The dates in question were Nov. 6 and 15 of 2004.

According to Alonso Machain, a participant in the killings who has since confessed, Skylar took a dry run with the murders on Nov. 6 before actually committing them on Nov. 15. Before the Hawkses died, they were forced to sign a power of attorney document giving Skylar control of their assets. They were then dumped overboard alive while tied to the boat's anchor.
