Canady, who was just 15 when the woman was slain, has admitted to paying her for sex on at least two occasions, but he has denied that he killed her, and according to published reports has instead tried to deflect the blame to a chum, Nadrian Campbell, who was with him at the time that Swick was attacked.
Campbell, now 16, provided crucial testimony in the case, telling jurors earlier in the two-week trial that he was with Canady when the teen propositioned Swick and then, according to published accounts of the trial testimony, taunted her.
"They were standing up (after having sex) and she was telling him to give her back her clothes — he had her clothes," Campbell testified, according to an account in the New Haven Register. Canady refused, and when the woman's cell phone tumbled out of her pocket and she bent to pick it up, Canady began kicking her in the face and head. Campbell told the jury that he left when he was unable to stop Canady's attack on the woman.
