Following the hearings before the subcommittee, lawmakers ordered industry executives to work with the ICV in developing a proposal for consideration to improve security measures on cruise ships. More hearings on the matter have been schedule for the future.
According to Laurie's attorney, her civil suit against Royal Caribbean is scheduled to begin in November.
"Her goal is to continue to bring awareness to the issue" Walker told Crime Library. "We had a newspaper article from the LA Times, there have been several articles in other newspapers, and we obtained some discovery in other Royal Caribbean cases showing that they have hundreds of recent incidences of sexual assault and battery throughout their fleet and have had a problem with such crimes for years and years."
A media relations spokesperson for Royal Caribbean could not be reached for comment.
