Another possibility is that she took her own life, but that theory too is fraught with questions for which there are no answers, say law enforcement officials. Among those questions are these: Where and how could she have done it, and how could she have concealed her own body so thoroughly that after months of frantic searching it would not have been recovered?
Finally, there is the theory that Tara, perhaps while searching for love or companionship or compassion, was killed.

Even now, a year after she vanished, authorities still cannot say with certainty what became of Tara Grinstead. A year into the investigation, the case is still classified as a missing person investigation.
And it is still an open case.
In the year since she vanished, the leads have slowed to a trickle, and investigators often find themselves retracing their steps. Still, none of them are prepared to give up and toss the 50-volume file on Tara Grinstead into the cold case file.
"I hope it never becomes a cold case," Chief Hancock told Crime Library this week. "We certainly think that there's a possibility of this being a solvable case...The reality is, when you run out of leads...you run out of possibilities. But right now, we're not at that point."
