RICHMOND, Va. (Crime Library) - Continued

Ben Fawley
Ben Fawley

His chosen method of revenge being rather simple — commit whatever acts he wanted in retaliation, then simply recount his own actions and put himself in the victims' place.

Viewed in this light, in a way, Ben Fawley was telling twisted variations of the real story all along. He told about the plastic bags. He told the police of mysterious drives to nowhere dirt roads.

Fawley also told of someone being snatched off the street unawares. Was Ben Fawley's abduction really Taylor Behl's? Did he track her movements on the evening of September 5, and when the right quiet moment fell on a side street, strike?

In a way, it is as if he was aiming for a pathological liars' hall of fame. Even his most recent "defense" of Taylor having died during "rough sex" is perhaps the truth seen through Fawley's own funhouse mirror-mind. He had failed at framing Erin Crabill, even though he'd gone to the trouble to take his chosen victim across the state to property right next to Crabill land. Police apparently had not bitten at his hinting of Erin Crabill plotting against him. No one took pity on Ben Fawley's desire to 'just go back to his kids...' and pity, no doubt, is what he was aiming for.

So, he told the "truth." Ben Fawley tried to make what the authorities had found fit his version of events. Ben Fawley was perhaps already trying this option out a week after Taylor disappeared, when he spoke to that television crew from the Richmond, VA, CBS affiliate. That was the interview where he referred to Taylor being wild, where he suggested her mother was finding out things about her daughter she might not want to know.
