Unable to dodge further questions about Erin's death, investigators finally acknowledged they were handling it as a homicide. According to Houze, they suspect Erin was strangled to death. That revelation angered many residents of Centerville, who felt they should have been warned that a killer was on the loose.
Yesterday, Wayne County Prosecutor Mike Shipman attempted to quell the public's worries by issuing a press release on the status of the investigation.
"Due to the nature of these deaths, we are conducting meticulous investigations to determine what happened to these young women ... I am working with law enforcement officers to make sure the investigations are done right. If crimes were committed, our goal is to see that the individual responsible for the crimes is convicted and punished appropriately in a courtroom... A suspect will only be named if I have evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that someone committed a crime.
"I have also declined to release information which could jeopardize discovering what happened to these young women ... More information will be shared with the public once we know the information is accurate and that releasing such information will not jeopardize the investigations and possible prosecution of cases. I ask that the public have patience with the investigations."
