Filyaw retreated to underground refuge full of porn and canned food

Authorities now believe he spent much of his time since his escape from the law hiding out in his underground world, amusing himself with porn and smoking cheap generic cigarettes.

Nearly two weeks ago, authorities now believe, Filyaw surfaced. Perhaps posing as a police officer, Filyaw approached Elizabeth Shoaf as she stepped off her school bus. Authorities suspect that he used handcuffs — when he was captured he was carrying a pair — to subdue the teenage girl, and dragged her back to one of his bunkers.

Hand Dug Bunker

Investigators have reported that Filyaw told the girl that the entrance to the bunker had been booby-trapped and warned her that if she tried to escape, or if anyone tried to rescue her, the bomb would detonate. While he had her, authorities allege, Filyaw sexually assaulted the child.

For ten days, family members, authorities and volunteers conducted a sweeping search for the girl, but found few clues.
