SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Crime Library) — Destiny Norton had been missing for a week in a city where temperatures reached well over 100 degrees.
Relatives and friends who were avidly searching for the 5-year-old girl steadfastly told themselves that she was alive and pushed aside the gruesome thought that her body was decomposing somewhere.

But less than 100 feet from her front door, neighbor Craig Roger Gregerson faced that reality because Norton's body had been in his basement for a week. So on July 23, he "attempted to mask the odor coming from the body with cleaning products," according to an FBI affidavit filed in Salt Lake County's Third District Court.
FBI agents were given these details by Gregerson during an interview following a failed polygraph exam. He subsequently signed a confession "confessing his involvement to the abduction and subsequent murder" of Norton, according to the affidavit.

During the interview, Gregerson said he had been planning to abduct Norton for some time and had written plans to do so.
Agents obtained a search warrant and seized the following items from Gregerson's home:
A white disposable suit and tennis shoes
A blue fabric couch with five pillows and cushions from a loveseat
A black Mormon bible
Two audio cassettes and two video cassettes
A sheet and towel
Two pillow cases in the washer
A clear baggie containing paper towels
Two silver necklaces
Cell phone and two cameras
A 50-pound bag of dog food with a T-shirt stuffed inside.
Agents expressed concern in the affidavit that Gregerson would destroy the evidence if it wasn't seized.
Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson agreed.
