SAEGERTOWN, PA — Since his release from prison in 1998, Edward Gingerich, 40, has managed to maintain a low profile and attract little, if any, attention from the media.  That all changed in the spring of 2007, when Gingerich coerced his 17-year-old daughter, Mary, to leave the custody of her grandparents without their permission.  Since that time, the case has taken several strange twists; last week, members of the Gingerich clan appeared in court on charges related to the case.

On Friday, Gingerich's brother, Joseph D. Gingerich, 43, of Rockdale Township, appeared before District Judge Lincoln Zilhaver on one count of harassment related to an incident that occurred on May 28.  According to the police report, Gingerich had harassed his niece, Mary, and another relative, Clara Gingerich, by shining a spotlight at their horse and buggy in an attempt to spook the horse when they rode by his house on Frisbeetown Road.

After hearing testimony from both sides in the matter, Justice Zilhaver pronounced Gingerich guilty, and sentenced him to 30 to 60 days in the county jail.  He was also ordered to pay $24.50 in court costs.  Gingerich has until August 12 to report to jail to begin serving his sentence.

Following Joseph Gingerich's court appearance, his nephews, 19-year-old Daniel E. Gingerich and 21-year-old David A. Gingerich, were both arraigned on criminal charges.

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) charged Daniel with defiant trespass and disorderly conduct on May 28, after he was allegedly found inside a residence where Mary was staying after he had already been informed that he was not allowed on the property.
