BAVARIA, Germany — Accused serial killer Volker Eckert was found hanging in his prison cell today, just one day after his 49th birthday. According to officials at Bayreuth prison, his death has been ruled a suicide. Eckert was arrested last year, when a surveillance camera caught him disposing of a body. Following his arrest, he confessed to five other murders in Spain, France, and Germany. In March, authorities announced Eckert was a suspect in at least 19 murders or attempted murders, between 1974, when he was just 15-years-old, and 2006. Authorities say most of Eckert's victims were involved in prostitution.
