The parents, through their lawyers, have repeatedly denied any abuse of their child.
Some aspects of the case revive memories of another Boulder, Colorado, slaying — that of JonBenet Ramsey 10 years ago. These parallels do not indicate an actual connection between the crimes but perhaps illuminate some of the reasons for the silence that now sits over the investigation into Jason Midyette's killing — at least from the perspective of the Midyette family.
The murder of JonBenet Ramsey is a legendary unsolved crime. From the time the 6-year-old beauty queen's face first hit the airwaves websites were springing up internet-wide to discuss and parse the investigation into the little girl's brutal murder in her home in Boulder on December 26, 1996. The death of John and Patsy Ramsey's youngest child has been fodder for books, numerous televised documentaries, and endless pages of discussion in chat rooms and on message boards on the web.

The similarities between the crimes are only on the surface. Like JonBenet Ramsey, Jason Midyette was born into prosperity; the property owned by his grandfather is worth tens of millions of dollars. Like JonBenet, Jason's death was violent, occurred under suspicious circumstances in a town where many people still do not expect such things to happen. As was the case with the slaying of JonBenet, the parents immediately came under suspicion, from law enforcement and likely from many reading articles in the paper or watching the local news.
However, the differences in the two cases are significant: there has never been any indication there was anything sexual about the killing of infant Jason Jay Midyette; Midyette was not allegedly kidnapped, his own parents brought him to the emergency room when they stated he was lethargic and unresponsive; while it was obvious immediately that JonBenet Ramsey was the victim of a violent crime, it has taken months to determine if Jason Midyette truly was a homicide victim.
