Pfc. Steven D. Green |
(Continued)
Former Pfc. Steven D. Green, age 21, originally from Midland, Texas was arrested at a relative's home in Marion, North Carolina, after returning from a funeral for a fallen former comrade in Virginia.
An unnamed soldier was being given a 'combat stress debriefing' sometime around June 20, 2006, when it was revealed that Green, along with other members of his unit, might have committed the mass-murder and rape in Mahmudiya.

Mahmudiya, in Iraq |
According to the federal affidavit, Green and three other men planned to rape a woman (Abeer Qassim Hamza), while on-duty at a Traffic Control Point near the home at some point between March 11th and 12th. One man was told to "monitor the radio" while the others went to the nearby house. At least two of the men changed clothes before they headed out. All the men were armed, with rifles and at least one shotgun.
Apparently Green herded three members of the Iraqi family into their bedroom as the other men threw Hamza to the floor. One of the sources for this information would later indicate that an AK-47 was already in that bedroom.
Green allegedly used the AK-47 to murder the two adults and Abeer Hamza's little sister. Steven Green allegedly came out of the room afterwards and said to the other men, "I just killed them. All are dead."
The federal affidavit indicated that Green and another man then raped Hamza, who had likely heard her family being murdered in the bedroom. One of the soldiers whose statements formed the basis of the document stated that Green then shot the teen 2-3 times in the head.
