Darien Watts spoke with Kevin Newland by phone a few more times in the next two days. In those conversations he reported having what sounded like a good time; he was hanging out with others, even showing off his "new car," racing with friends.
Kevin Newland was found at his brother's residence on June 27, 2006. He spoke by phone that day with Det. Tim Hines from Spokane County, and told Detective Hines what appeared to be a slightly different story from the one he'd told his friend Darien.
Newland told Tim Hines that he'd purchased the vehicle from a man named Jamie for $3,000.
After he was picked up by police, not long after the conversation with Detective Hines, Kevin Newland admitted that he knew Jamie Lynn Drake. Newland lived with Drake and her roommate for a brief period two to three months ago, but he also insisted he hadn't seen Jamie since April of 2006, and that he had nothing to do with her disappearance.
Kevin Wayne Newland had a profile on MySpace.com.
Kevin Newland's last sign-in to MySpace.com appeared to be on June 25, 2006, three days after anyone last heard from Jamie Lynn Drake.
Newland's page, at http://www.myspace.com/77075648, was dominated by an image of lightning striking water just off a beach. Kevin Newland's profile photo showed him with two other young men he referred to as "new roommates" in the photo's caption. In the picture Newland was grinning rakishly, wearing a baseball cap backwards. He was holding a half-empty bottle of rum, his arms draped around the shoulders of his taller friends. On his shirt was mock road sign with the silhouette of a shapely woman and the legend beneath, "Slippery when wet."

On his main MySpace profile page, Newland indicated that he loved "street racing, motorcycles, snowboarding . . . partying and having a good time with friends." Newland also wrote that he liked "action or horror" movies, TV shows like That 70's Show and Family Guy, but he was "not a big book person."
