Out of prison on the streets and back again
It took two years, but Inman was finally convicted and on September 5, 1989, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
North Carolina knew Inman as Dept. of Corrections # 0201046. Jerry Inman's record in that state was similar to his history with the Florida prison system.

Jerry Inman was convicted in North Carolina on September 26, 1988 of another sex offense. The crime occurred in Buncombe County, and for the 2nd degree sex assault Inman was sentenced to a maximum term of 20 years. According to his record, Inman tried to escape twice, and had at least 24 other unspecified infractions. For North Carolina's purposes, Jerry Inman's sentence was up in January of 1999. A 2nd degree sexual assault netted Inman 11 years of a 20-year sentence in North Carolina, and this was apparently served concurrently with his sentence in Florida.
Here it appeared that the profile given out by South Carolina authorities prior to their focusing on Jerry Inman was partially accurate. Inman's history in Florida and North Carolina, beginning when he was still a teen, was certainly one of sexual, but not yet homicidal violence.
